LEIGHTON FANS OUT IN FORCE.
It's nice to be loved. Jump jockey Leighton Aspell found out just how much yesterday when greeted by members of the Leighton Aspell Fan Club at Fontwell.
The assembled Leightonians came in anticipation of the Leighton Aspell Fan Club Handicap Chase - all desperately hoping their man (pictured front) could bring home 7-1 shot Hazeljack in front.
Sadly, twas not to be, as the 7-1 starting price proved prophetic only in as much as Hazeljack trotted home 71 lengths behind the winner.
Still, Aspell's fans will take heart in knowing they are part of the best, The biggest, The original jockeys fan club.

NO JOY FOR ASPELL IN HIS OWN RACE
AS STROLLING VAGABOND LANDS SPOILS:
Leighton Aspell successfully negotiated thw gruelling 3m2f of the Leighton Aspell Fan Club Handicap Chase. The trouble was, he did so over 71 lengths behind the winner.
The feature race, backed by one of the sports more bizarre fan clubs, formed in 2001 went to Strolling Vagabond, with Aspell's mount Hazeljack, last of the six runners in heavy ground.

THE SPORTSMAN MARCH 28 2006:
Racing's broadcaster of the year
ROBERT COOPER'S COLUMN.
"I have an award from the Leighton Aspell Fan Club,
I voted for myself"
.
.
.For an unprecedented second year in a row I have received an award - a much coveted 'Leighton' - from the Leighton Aspell Fan Club.
Last year I voted for myself and a similar strategy this time looks to have done the trick.
Hundreds of loyal fans roam the length and bteadth of the country urging their man to succeed.
A couple of weeks ago they were rewarded with a colossal 5,588/1 trable at Uttoxeter.
I even met a Aspell fan at a lowly banded Southwell meeting the other day, he was perusing the fan clubs magazine over one of the tracks hideously overpriced beef rolls. It was there that I learnt of my nomination.
Shy and modest by nature Aspell says he is flattered by the attention, but "I do get some stick in the weighing room".
