DEPUTY DAN

IN MEMORY OF DEPUTY DAN
11/06/08 - 20/02/16

Deputy Dan with his devoted  lass Daisy sharp.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a sad day on Saturday 20th February 2016 when the fan clubs favourite horse Deputy Dan lost his life.
Dan collapsed and died from a heart attack shortly after crossing the winning line in 5th place
He was competing in the 2m6f Rendleshaw hurdle at Haydock Park.
Ridden by his usual Jockey Leighton Aspell, Dan was running well and had moved into second place 3 out, He wasn't too fluent 2 out, and looked to be weakening approaching the last. He was eased up to a near walking pace after the last, which suggests Leighton felt something wasn't right, He collapsed soon after the winning post.
Our thoughts are with his Lass Daisy Sharp, Owner Mrs Syder, Trainer Oliver and Tarnya Sherwood and everyone at Rhonehurst Stables in Lambourn.

Oliver sherwood was inundated on his facebook page with messages of condolence. Oliver replied by this writting a tribute below to Dan on his face book page.

"Thank you all for the wonderful messages with regard to Deputy Dan.

I want this post to be a celebration of a loveable goon with big ears who gave us so much pleasure as a person and as a racehorse, he will be much missed he was a horse that never failed to make us smile with his antics, a few of which are listed below.

Dan would chew whatever was left within his reach, rugs, grooming kit, lead ropes even his door card, he was very immature in lots of ways. ...
If he went on the horse walker and wasn't tied to the front he would just stand still and stop it going around it was one of his favourite tricks.

He was prone to stumbling, more so as a youngster and usually through lack of concentration, hence us calling him a big goon, it suited him with his laid back almost docile ways.
He was cheeky and playful as he demonstrated when kicking Archie out of his stable, full on the backside, not hard, but enough to leave a perfect hoof print on Archie's cheeks. This might sound nasty but if you knew Dan it was hysterical, even Archie couldn't stop laughing.

Dan was kind, honest and affectionate he was a very good ride at home, he worked ok never flash, in fact before he ran for the first time I wasn't even sure he was a racehorse, but he had that relentless gallop, a love of heavy ground and a wonderfully relaxed attitude to everything.
He also had class in abundance, as we were to find out.

There are so many "Dan" stories that will be told and re told in the string for a long time to come, we have wonderful memories of a dear friend and he will live on through those tales as does Eric's Charm, whom we still often talk about.

Losing a horse never gets any easier but we know we gave him the best life possible and ultimately he died doing what he enjoyed and was bred for" Oliver Sherwood.
